Chicas Verdes hosted Chicas Verdes: Food Desert Workshopsin advisory classes to start food injustice awareness in the classrooms. In order to start these advisory events, we came up with a calendar which accommodated to teachers’ lesson plans along with timing. We also came up with an application detailing what we would be doing in the classrooms. These applications were placed in teacher boxes, giving them an opportunity to sign up for the workshops. A follow up email was then sent to the teachers with more details. Since we wanted to get a snapshot of the students in our school, we purposely selected homerooms of different grades and of different small learning schools. In order to meet our task, we met on a weekly basis during and after school on Thursdays and Fridays to come up with our calendar and start planning events. Before we started our workshops, the group created a pretest survey that would give us detail on the students eating habits. We then discussed the topics we wanted to cover and designed lesson plans that were not only educational but also fun and engaging. As we were planning we decided that we wanted to include visuals and this came in the form of screenings, we chose Food Inc. and Forks over Knives. We also knew that we wanted to provide students the opportunity to not only learn about alternative snacks but to taste them as well and this included creating snack bags with veggie and banana chips, along with organic fruit rolls and organic fruit juices. For our last workshop we plan on giving the students a post survey to assess if there were any changes in their perception of healthy eating. The students will also be treated to tasting our delicious organic smoothies
